Berlin’s international centre for cardiovascular medicine is one of the most well-known cardiological centres in Germany and whole Europe.Since 1986 complex surgeries are performed daily on a heart, lungs and large vessels, including heart transplantation and thoracic organ transplantation. DHZB specialists use the most innovative surgical methods and cooperate with many European and Russian clinics.

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery

The department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery consists of the operating unit with 7 operating rooms at the central clinic (DHZB) and two in the Paulin Hospital. The operating rooms have special life support and emergency equipment. Around 5,000 operations are performed each year. More than 3,000 operations are performed with the use of heart-lung bypass machine, also called a cardiopulmonary bypass pump.

The operating unit consists of a pre-operative area, two intensive care units, pre- and post-operative area, transplantation of thoracic organs (and VIP-department in the Paulin Hospital)

The main department directions:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with and without the use of endoscopic method for cardiovascular disease
  • Transmyocardial laser revascularization
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Frameless valves
  • Aortic valve surgery: Ross procedure
  • Minimally invasive aortic valve replacement
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm and abdominal aneurysm surgery
  • Endovascular stent grafting (endovascular aortic repair – EVAR)
  • Surgery of congenital heart defects in children and adults
  • Heart and Lung Transplant program in children and adults
  • Total artificial heart (TAH)
  • Surgical procedures for atrial fibrillation
  • Treatment of arrhythmias and cardiac resynchronizationtherapy (CRT)
  • Surgical treatment for ischemic cardiomyopathy
  • Treatment for chest wall tumours
  • Cardiopsychology
  • Examination at the Centre
  • Please send a request via email for treatment in Germany

Cardiology and therapeutic department

The cardiovascular department has a full range of heart and blood disease diagnosis and treatment. The cardiology department is equipped for cardiac catheterization, it has two nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus (NMR Equipment) for electrophysiological heart study and arrhythmia treatment and computed tomography. Although all modern possibilities for functional diagnostics are available, in particular echocardiography, ECG and MRI alone and with the load and spiroergometry.

The catheter labs are performing not only coronary angiography, but also about 50% of the stent implantation, eliminating the need for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.

In addition, intravascular ultrasound studies and angiography of the abdomen, head and feet with hands are conducted. If necessary stents can be also implanted to avoid operation.

Further biopsy is done for precise diagnosis of myocarditis.Catheter laboratory is performing pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defobrillators.
