Department of Neurosurgery at Charité Berlin offers examination and treatment of patients with head injuries, brain tumours, meninges and malformations of the brain and spinal cord, spinal pain syndromes.Particularly important activity of the clinic is the treatment of cerebral arteriovenous deformation, carried out, with the assistance of neurology experts interdisciplinary.
The main areas of specialization of the clinic include:
- Neurovascular surgery

Department of Neurosurgery at Charité Berlin is highly specialized on microsurgical treatment of vascular disorders, brain tumours and multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of craniofacial disorders.
More than 2,500 outpatients and about 4,000 patients from all over the world are treated annually at this department. About 1,000 brain surgeries, more than 500 spine surgeries and more than 30 peripheral nerve surgeries are performed every year.
Most accurate and precise modern diagnostic methods are used in the neurosurgery: computed tomography, ultrasound methods, magnetic resonance imaging.
Still one of the most important areas of neurosurgery remains the treatment of brain tumours.International Classification counts around 10 histological types CNS cancer (central nervous system). The name “brain cancer” is false, because it is a carcinoma of epithelial tissue, which is not in the brain.
Especially brain tumours, does not matter benign or malignant have the same effect of brain compression. In this regard, much more important for the brain tumour treatment becomes its location and how much of the brain have been compressed by the tumour.
Usually malignant tumours have to be removed surgically because of their progressive rapid growth and metastases. Benign tumours grow slowly, do not terminate neighbouring organs and tissues and do not spread into the vascular and lymphatic system.
Treatment for brain tumours:
- Surgery
- Radiotherapy (gamma-therapy or “gamma-knife”)
- Chemotherapy.
There is also a method for symptomatic treatment, it is used primarily for patients with inoperable tumours (surgery is not possible for any reason). Symptomatic treatment of tumours is aimed to eliminate symptoms.
Doctors at the neurosurgical clinic are leading specialists in Germany with large experience in complex surgeries. The clinic applies number of innovative diagnostic and surgical methods which allow to minimize risk of complications and ensure optimal results.
